North American ash varies hugely in density and weight , hence the disparity in sound between genuine Southern swamp ash ( think Mike Lull , Nordstrand, U.S Lakland ) and Northern ash ( think Musicman , 70s Fender and serious lumbago ) . SpletAlder is a really well balanced tonewood,, where Swamp ash generally has a little brighter tone, but it can vary from one piece of wood to the next. In a mix you probably wouldn't be able to hear the difference. I like the weight of most swamp ash bodies, and think on a transparent finish, the ash grain looks a lot better.
